More records were etched into the history books at the Roma Saleyards on Tuesday when a pen of 19 bullocks sold to 504c/kg, reaching a top price of $3126/head and setting a new record.
Auctioneer Brad Neven, Watkins and Co said the result made the Charolais cross bullocks the highest grossing pen of steers sold in the history of the Roma Saleyards.
The bullocks, which were finished on oats by long time client Ann, Loughnan, Bindango, Roma, sold to Victorian processors O'Connor Abattoir, at Packenham.
Unfortunately Mrs Loughnan was not on hand at the saleyards to witness the history in the making, but when told said she was simply touched by the result.
Mrs Loughnan and her late husband Joe had been bullock paddock finishers all their life, and she said she really didn't think their cattle could achieve it.
Mr Neven said the cattle has been bought by Mrs Loughnan as 200kg weaners that he had selected and they had been bred by Glen and Lynette Huntley, Kilburnie, Roma.
He said all the industry judges predicted the heavy cattle market highs would last about six to eight months, but it was certainly showing no signs of easing.
"Yesterday we witnessed heavy cows making over 500kg and topping at 394c/kg, averaging 358c/kg, which is unheard of before," Mr Neven said.
In all, a total of 6707 head of cattle were consigned to Roma's store sale.
