It was a family affair for the Central Highlands-based Holzwart families as stud principal Jeff Holzwart welcomed a crowd to the Bauhinia Park Charolais and Angus sale, which saw over 100 bid cards registered.
The sale achieved 100 per cent clearance, with 78 bulls selling to average an impressive $14,038 - an overall increase of $4106 from last year's sale result.
An even line of 38 Charolais bulls, including 21 polls and five red factor sire prospects, were offered first through the selling ring by vendors Ryan and Rachel Holzwart.
The Charolais component saw an average of $13,157 - over $2000 more per head from the 2020 sale.
The 40 Angus bulls offered by Jeff and Raelea Holzwart were just as rewarding, selling to an average of $14,875. Final figures showed a robust increase of $6018 from 2020 sale results.
Topping the sale was Angus bull Bauhinia Park Rito Q542, selling to repeat buyer Mick Busby, Star Downs, Alpha, for $22,000.
The 23-month-old son of Glenmorgan Rito K504, out of a Millah Murrah Klooney daughter, had plenty of shape and bone, and boasted impressive figures in the top 5pc of the breed 200-, 400-, 600-day growth and mature cow weight.
This was coupled with a carcase estimated breeding value of +75, and retail beef yield of +0.9, and positive for intramuscular fat percentage.
Mr Busby said he continues to buy from the Holzwart family as the bulls are bred for Central Highlands conditions and there is no setback in acclimatising bulls from the south.
The bull will be used over Angus/Droughtmaster-cross cows to breed beef cattle at the 5000 head breeder block at Star Downs.
Mr Busby was also a volume buyer for the day, taking home four bulls to average $17,250.
The second-top priced bull, and topping the Charolais draft, was Bauhinia Park Quade (PP) who sold for $20,000 to Tom and Emma Brodie, Knapdale, Winton.
The fleshy polled son of Ascot Eldorado L504 (P), weighed 922 kilograms, had a 145 square centimetre EMA and scrotal circumference of 39cm.
As new buyers to the sale, the Brodies took home just the one bull.
Mr Brodie said he had his eye on three or four bulls, but Quade was his number one pick.
The Brodies own both a sheep property and cattle property at Winton, and Mr Brodie said he buys bulls every few years to breed better commercial cattle.
"The bulls stood out as very good, structurally sound, with good feet. The mob of bulls were well presented, and consistent," he went on to say.
Charolais sale highlights included Bauhinia Park Qlunker (P) a 24 month-old Charolais bull selling for $19,000 to the Scott Family, Yacamunda, Collinsville, along with Bauhinia Park Quincy who also made $19,000 to local buyer George Hoare, Rockview Cattle Co, Blackwater.
Earnest bidding for the second part of the sale saw Angus bull Bauhinia Park Phoenix Q222 sell to volume buyer on the day, Echo Hills Grazing Co, Springsure, for $19,000.
Echo Hills secured two Charolais and four Angus bulls to gross $100,000 and for an average of $16,666.
A son of Bauhinia Park Thunderbird M38, the 23-month-old Angus bull Bauhinia Park M38 Q72 sold to Mabbin Station, Moranbah, for $19,000.
Volume buyers included Mulgrave Grazing Co, Barcaldine, who purchased four bulls to average $11,000.
Stud principal Ryan Holzwart said they were ecstatic with the results, and have come away with a solid average.
"The results show where the cattle industry is at the moment, there is a lot of confidence about," he said.
