Landsborough Highway road users who have been restricted to a traffic-controlled single lane crossing of the Alice River bridge south of Barcaldine since November 2020 have been advised that current restrictions are expected to remain in place until October.
The traffic controls, which include 40km/hr speed restrictions, were implemented when a dip in the structure became apparent.
Investigations into the cause of the movement of a pier on the bridge were said to be in their final stages last March, but the Department of Transport and Main Roads advised at the time that geotechnical studies would take several more weeks to conclude.
Last week the department announced that from early August, motorists will see works underway near the bridge to construct a sidetrack.
That's expected to be operational in October.
"At this time, traffic will be moved to the sidetrack to enable the start of rehabilitation works on the bridge," a statement read. "Motorists are reminded to be aware of traffic conditions and to follow the direction of traffic control and signage at this location."
An average of 400 vehicles use the Alice River bridge daily.
