The Whitechurch family of 4 Ways Charolais at Inverell in NSW tasted success just a few months ago when they claimed the grand champion Charolais bull at Beef Australia in Rockhampton.
But this time it was a half brother and the reserve junior champion Beef Australia bull who stole the spotlight to be named runner-up of the Sire Shootout.
4 Ways MLR Qupid Q46E, a son of the $83,000 record priced Moongool Lunar Rise and out of 4 Ways Bella B2E, received $3000 in cash thanks to GDL, $1000 Riverina voucher and $1000 ACM advertising vouchers.
The 26-month-old show bull initially placed second in the European class judging under Roger Evans, Nagol Park Shorthorns, Tamworth, NSW, but when the places were wiped clean for the final, it worked in his favour.
Final judge Guy Lord, Branga Plains, Walcha, NSW, described him as a bull with a tremendous amount of power and volume.
"I was just blown away by the amount of capacity this bull has got," he said.
"...for all that muscularity it hasn't affected his athleticism one bit."
While he was unable to pip Barronessa Holloway at the final post, the runner-up title was still promotion for his upcoming sale birth at the 4 Ways Charolais and NK Brahman bull sale at Emerald in Queensland on September 6 as lot four.
Stud principal David Whitechurch said Qupid was now bound for the Royal Queensland Show in August.
"We just wanted to see how they fared against all the other breeds of cattle and just for some good advertisement," he said.
"After coming reserve the night before I thought maybe he wasn't in with a shot in the final but you always hope. We think it's a great idea for anyone to put any animal up and give those who don't even show cattle a way of showcasing their cattle and see how they compare."
