THE 25-month-old Meldon Park Queanbeyan Q042 (H) grabbed a headline for himself in the main ring at Beef 2021 yesterday but is unlikely to avoid a salering in the near future.
According to Liz Skene, Meldon Park Simmentals , Cecil Plains, Queanbeyean remains on the list for their forthcoming bull sale despite his crowning as Grand Champion Male on Day 2 of the triennial exposition.
"That was not expected," Ms Skene said.
"But he is a nice type and he is tidy across the top and has always had good muscle definition. He was bred by a bull that was here at the previous Beef (in 2018). He was an embryo calf and has grown nicely.
"This was actually his first show and it's a pleasant surprise but he will be in our sale at Rolleston at the end of September."
A solid son of Meldon Park Man-Up (PP) and Meldon Park (G1022), he cut an imposing figure after tipping the scales at 992kg and judge Cherie Gooding, Marlegoo Charbrays, was taken by other key statistics including an EMA of 142sq cm and PB (eight) and rib fat (six) measurements.
"It was tough choosing and it was a little bit like splitting hairs because the three bulls in contention each had claims," Ms Gooding said.
"He wasn't the biggest bull we've had out here today and in extreme environments you want bulls that can cope and he tracked really well. He has the figures and I am sure he'll perform."
The Reserve Senior Champion male was another from Meldon Park, the 23-month-old Quin Q76 (Lucrana General-Meldon Park Centrefold). While younger, he had the grand champion's measure on the scales (1010kg).
Elite Cattle Co Meandarra, claimed the Junior Champion male ribbon through Elite Quotable (Elite Money Maker PP ET AI B-Elite Whammy PP ET AI B) and Meldon Park Quincey (Woonallee Lampoon P ET AI-Meldon Park N41) was the Reserve Junior Champion Male.
Julie Pocock, Ellendale Red Simmentals, Lowood, was thrilled when Ellendale Smokin' Hot 'N' Foxxy (P) won Ms Gooding's favour for the Grand Champion Female and Senior Champion Female double because of her "feminimity".
"There was a smoothness and evenness to her and a lot of depth, which caught the eye," Ms Gooding said of the daughter of Ellendale Stylish Influence and Ellendale Sweet Golden Grace.
"She has always been an impressive female and she travels so well. She was a Show heifer in 2019 and didn't go anywhere last year because of COVID but now she's three and this is her second calf," Ms Pocock said.
"We're pretty excited about her and the future."
The Reserve Senior Champion Female was Meldon Park Nessy (S) from Meldon Park Simmental Stud.
In other results, the Champion calf male was K.B.V. Red General, Kbv Simmental Stud, Murphys Creek. He is a son of Remington Generallee 106 T and the dam Bar 15 Miss Knight and the judge rated him as the "complete bull".
Ellendale All Style (by Ellendale Predestined Flare from Ellendale Sheza Stylish Dream) was named Reserve Calf Champion Male.
The Calf Champion Female was Cannon Dee Simmentals' 12-month-old Cannon Dee Ruby R121 (Smithbilt Molson 21M-Anchor D Kael 255C) and Hobbs Livestock Keepsakes H3 Summit (P) (ET) (AI) (R) was the Reserve Calf Champion Female.
The Junior Champion Female was K.B.V. Queen Of Hearts (P) (R) and the Reserve Junior Champion Female was Ellendale Smokin' Hot Diva.
