It was first time triumph for Boningar Pastoral Company, who exhibited and sold cattle at the Elders Dalby Feeder and Weaner sale, and brought home the grand championship award at the Dalby Saleyards last Friday.
A modest exhibitor, Boningar Pastoral Company's Craig Brimblecombe, Meandarra, said he was in shock with the win.
The winning grand championship pen was a line of 16 month-old purebred Santa Gertrudis milk tooth steers, all sired by home sires bred in their small stud herd from the Boningar Santa Gertrudis stud.
Mr Brimblecombe said they mainly bred stud Santa Gertrudis bulls for their own use and their bloodlines are heavily influenced by the Greenup family's Rosevale Stud breeding with a spash of Yarrawonga Waco and Gyranda prefixes.
The winning pen of steers had an average weight of 490 kilograms sold for 238c/kg to return $2075/head.
Offered as EU accredited steers they were bought by Talbingo Pastoral Company, Dalby and will be finished for the non-HGP feeder market.
In all, the special feeder and weaner sale attracted 1327 head at the special Dalby sale.
Cattle were mainly drawn from the local supply area, plus a consignments from Tambo, Morven, Mitchell, and Yuleba.
Other class winners include the Clark family's Daandine Pastoral Company, with a Santa pen of steers drawn from Gwambegwine near Taroom. Daandine Pastoral was award a bull credit from Rosevale Santa Gertrudis stud.
Owen and Jeanette Murphy, Murphy Grazing, Yuleba claimed both the Charolais bull credit from Ascot Charoalis Stud, Warwick and the Droughtmaster bull credit from Clonara Droughtmasters, Glenmorgan.
The Angus bull credit given by Burenda Stud, Bell, was awarded to Lyndale Pastoral Cpmpany, Roma.
Overall buyers appreciated the excellent quality on offer, and this was also reflected in the prices achieved, while a large number of feeder operators were in attendance and operating, along with a good panel of restockers.
Other market highlights Angus weaner steers under 280kg made to 650c and averaged 605c/kg, and returned a top of $1,646/head.
Angus weaner steers under 330kg made to 558c to average 553c/kg, and returned an average of $1,657/head.
Angus weaner heifers under 280kg averaged 488c, with a handful of European cross making to 510c/kg. Angus feeder steers under 400kg made to 534c to average 508c/kg, to return an average of $1,821/head.
Charolais feeder steers in the same weight range were in the largest numbers and averaged 460c and made to 480c/kg, with the heaviest pens returning $1,829/head. Angus feeder steers over 400kg made to 480c to average 453c/kg, to return an average of $1,970/head.
Santa Gertrudis steers dominated the over 400kg section and made to 438c to average 433c/kg, to return an average of $1,975/head. Angus and Simbrah feeder heifers under 400kg made to 478c/kg to return an average of $1,610/head.
Elders Dalby branch manager Ashley Loveday said the quality of the cattle was definitely on-par with the prices achieved on the day.
It was an excellent yarding of cattle drawn from 26 loyal clients," Mr Loveday said.
He said the Elders team is now working towards next year's event which will be held in April, 2022.
