With the drought broken and border restrictions lifted, Hazeldean's May 6 on property sale will see a large number of bulls hit the market.

The renowned Angus stud will sell 100 bulls on the day, with numbers up significantly on previous years.

Hazeldean's sales coordinator Ed Bradley says it is the beginning of a year long campaign to help their loyal client base rebuild.

Following on from a successful Embryo Transfer program and a really good season in Cooma, Hazeldean will be parting with about 600 bulls this year.

Mr Bradley says this will help to meet the demand in the market, while providing their clients with top quality genetics.

"We just want to take care of our clients and make sure they can get some value when things are going crazy like they are," he explained.

"2018, 2019 and the first half of 2020 were all shocking for producers. A lot of people are saying it was one of the most savage and swift droughts they've seen in a very long time," he continued.

"(Now with the drought broken and everyone buying again), the demand is high and the prices are increased too. So, we're trying to meet the market with a few more in supply and subdue the prices a little... by meeting the demand for our buyers."

Hazeldean has a sterling reputation and an extremely loyal client base. Some have been buying from Hazeldean for over 20 years, Mr Bradley said, and they attract new buyers each year.

Owned and operated by the Litchfield family for generations, Hazeldean is one of the oldest and most renowned Angus studs in Australia.

Hazeldean uses all available means to maximise the rate of genetic gain. Every year, they conduct a large Artificial Insemination and Embryo Transfer programme within their 1900 cow herd, using the breeds' most proven, progeny tested sires.

Mr Bradley says their breeding philosophy is based entirely upon one thing: getting the best returns for their clients.

Not only do they use genomics but all of their cattle are bred under commercial conditions with a strong focus profitable traits.

"Everything has to add up to dollars in profit per hectare for our clients. That's how our bulls are bred," Mr Bradley explained.

"They have to be tough, hardy, commercial bulls our clients can get longevity out of."

Mr Bradley said all of their cattle had to be 'commercially relevant'. That's why they put a lot of pressure on fertility and have a strong focus on producing maternal females with easy calving.

They also have a strong focus on temperament, structure and Intermuscular Fat (marbling). Their bulls have to 'tick all of the boxes'.

"At the end of the day, if you have a really good functional animal that ticks a lot of boxes plus they have plenty of marbling, those are the bulls that really make money," Mr Bradley said.

The on property bull sale will take place at 11am on Thursday, May 6, at Hazeldean, located at 1410 Maffra Road, Cooma, NSW. It will also be interfaced with Auctions Plus.

There will be a chance for viewing from 9.30am on sale day as well as an Open Day on Thursday, April 29.

A full Angus steak barbecue lunch will be provided for all who attend the on property sale.
