Kenilworth Brahmans have again placed their stamp for breeding quality when a line of 193 weaner heifers with an average weight of 225 kilograms sold for a record average price of 1034c/kg to return $2327/head at the Dalrymple Saleyards last Wednesday.
Vendors Kelvin and Margaret Maloney, together with Brad and Kelveen Hancock of Collinsville, were overwhelmed and emotional with the result.
Kenilworth Brahmans' top three pens made an outstanding 1190c/kg to return $2261, $2423 and $2358, respectively.
Mrs Maloney said they were astonished as they were expecting market value.
"We always work on market value as it's a happy medium that works for everybody. To say we were surprised would be an absolute understatement," she said.
Mrs Maloney said they were delighted all the No.0 heifers went to Kevin Herrod Junior, whose father, Kevin Herrod Senior, had been buying bulls from them for more than 30 years.
"We are extremely happy they have gone to a wonderful home and will be retained as breeders as we didn't want them to finish in a feedlot," Mrs Maloney said.
Mr Herrod said they planned to use the heifers to bred herd Brahman and Brangus type bulls.
"Some of the heifers will be joined to Brahman bulls, the balance to Angus," Mr Herrod said.
Malcolm Smith, Elders rebate agent, Charters Towers - who handles the Kenilworth account - said the outstanding line-up of heifers represented 50 years of dedicated polled breeding genetics.
He said with their quality and temperament, they were an absolute dream to draft on foot and work them through the crows nest at the saleyards.
Mr Smith said the Maloneys originally planned to hold onto the heifers as future breeders.
"However their country is starting to dry off and the grass is deteriorating," Mr Smith said.
The outstanding result was on the back of a similar sale in September when Kenilworth Brahmans put females on the open market for the first time.
It resulted with the top line of 104 yearling heifers, with an average weight of 302kg across four pens, selling for an astonishing 1174c/kg to average $3544/head.
