An outstanding offering of females at the inaugural Great Northern Brahman Sale at Proserpine on Friday has resulted in a new record price for a registered Brahman female.
The Brownson family, Brownson Brahmans, Charters Towers, paid $63,000 to secure Cambil Dienka 5826 (IVF) (H) - a daughter of "breed-leading female" NCC Dienka 3652 (IVF) (H), purchased by The North Queensland Cattle Consortium in 2015 for $45,000.
The first progeny offered from sire Ooline Manziel 3205 (PS), the rising two-year-old red heifer - marketed as "an opportunity to secure the latest and best red genetics available in the Brahman industry" - drew the attention of seven interested parties.
Consortium member Lawson Camm, Cambil Brahmans, Proserpine, said the group was ecstatic with the top bid and how well the sale went overall.
"We knew that she would go well, there had been a fair bit of interest in the heifer, but you never think that they'd go that well," Mr Camm said.
"She was a heifer that had a lot of size to her and volume, heaps of bone, and her breed character and overall outlook was an attraction to buyers.
"She was a lovely, rich-coloured heifer with a beautiful temperament, and she was a pretty complete package coming from such a good mother and sired by a bull that's doing a good job."
Despite being pleased with the strong interest from several parties in the lead-up to the sale, Mr Camm said the group had considered keeping Cambil Dienka 5826.
"It was a decision when we bought [NCC Dienka 3652] that we would just sell the first progeny off together as a consortium and she's part of that first progeny, but we did have some long discussions about keeping her," Mr Camm said.
The line-up from the consortium - which incorporates the Cambil, Ooline, Badilla, Palm Creek, and Burdekin Brahman studs - saw all 31 red and grey heifers sell for an average of $9790 to gross $303,500.
A second-top price of $28,000 was achieved twice - both for grey heifers.
Kelvin and Margaret Maloney, Kenilworth stud, Mt Coolon, landed the winning bid on 23-month-old Cambil Jewel 5806 (PS).
Sired by Kenrol Darrocca 2761 (PP) and from Cambil Jewel Manso 5240 (AI) (H), the long-bodied, polled female was two months pregnancy-tested-in-calf to Lanes Creek WT Jaxonite (PP).
The Scott families of Ruan Grazing, Clermont, and Rosetta Grazing, Collinsville, also paid the second-top price to take home Cambil Jewel 6029 (IVF) (PS).
IVF Aspirations topped at $22,000 for a package of five guaranteed transferable embryos from the top-seller's dam, NCC Dienka 3652 (IVF) (H), also knocked down to the Scott families.
Selling all three of the packages on offer, the IVF Aspirations averaged $13,666 to gross $41,000.
Semen from Kenrol Darrocca 2761 (PP) was also in demand, topping the semen packages section of the catalogue at $2800 per straw for a package of five straws to Blue Water Hills stud, Mackay.
Three semen packages of five straws averaged $1317 per straw to gross $19,750.
