CONSISTENT RNA Paddock to Palate broad ribbon performers Michael and David Sullivan, Riverglen Charolais, posted one of their best sale results after 48 bulls averaged $5781 at Roma on Wednesday.
As expected, values lifted in line with the current cattle market to see the average rise $1538 on last year and the clearance rate improved from 81 per cent to 96pc on the back of solid repeat buyer competition.
Riverglen co-principal David Sullivan said he was "rapt with the sale result" and could not be happier with his bulls' presentation and the strong return buyer support.
Included in the catalogue were five bulls from guest vendors Greg and Kelli Kelly, Juandah Charolais, Guluguba, which averaged $5500.
Long-term buyer Richard Golden, Golden Grazing, Potters Flat, Yuleba, bid the $10,000 equal top money for Riverglen P2849 (P), a 23-month-old son of Ascot Kilroy K143E (AI) (ET) (P) with excellent figures across the board, including a 136 square centimetre eye muscle area and a scrotal circumference of 40 centimetres.
Mr Golden said he was chasing a poll bull with excellent figures across all scan data.
Riverglen P2849 will be used as a terminal cross in his Bos indicus-based herd with the progeny destined for the feeder market, he said.
Gavin and Caroline Roberts, Ridgelands, Injune, were also on the lookout for improved carcase performance when they selected Riverglen P2898, a well-balanced, big square-butted son of Palgrove Longitude (AI) (P) for the $10,000 equal top money.
The Roberts family bought three quality herd improvers - all sons of Palgrove Longitude (AI) (P) - for a $9500 average.
Astute cattleman Todd Wathen, Golden Pastoral Holdings, Nullin, Yuleba, was also on the lookout for quality replacements and bought nine bulls for a $5888 average.
Mr Wathen said he based his selections on good weight-for-age, large eye muscle areas and big scrotal circumferences. The bulls will be used over high-content Bos indicus cows.
Joint selling agent Cyril Close, TopX, Roma, said the sale was a success mainly because of the outstanding presentation of the bulls and their excellent scan figures.
