Powerful new Hereford genetics will soon call Queensland home following the Herefords Australia Wodonga National Show and Sale in May.
Three southern Queensland studs were successful in their quest for new sires, including Bowen Downs Poll Herefords, Meandarra and Warwick, who purchased the junior and grand champion bull of the show, Kanimbla Power Town P067.
Offered by Kanimbla Livestock, and purchased in partnership with Geoff Birchnell, 3R Livestock, NSW, the Bowen family paid $30,000 for a bull they believe is "a complete package".
Described by many as a rare and faultless sire, the 21-month-old son of American sire NJW 73S W18 Hometown 10Y and out of Kanimbla Nicky L084 weighed in at 916 kilograms with a 42cm scrotal circumference.
Bowen Downs manager Bart Bowen said the family was extremely excited to welcome such a powerful sire to their ranks.
"One of the things that stood out to me from the forefront was his growth for age," Mr Bowen said.
"He's 21-months-of-age and 916kg, and while he is obviously quite growthy and muscular for that age, he's still retaining that balance and mobility as well.
"For the Queensland market, I think he's got good skin and hair, and he represents where the Hereford breed needs to be heading in the future."
Mr Bowen said Power Town combines stud quality with commercial practicality.
"This is the type of homozygous poll Hereford bull we believe commercial producers expect from our breed," he said.
"He maintains softness and length but has got a lot of ability to put down fat. He particularly has the potential to add a lot to a Bos indicus-base female herd; he's going to be able to meet that MSA score.
"Similarly, from a fertility perspective, he comes from a really strong female line and that's very important to us, because we see high fertility as the greatest potential for commercial producers to increase their profitability."
Power Town is currently having semen collected at Holbrook, with limited semen being offered through Beefgen Australia.
"We are also collecting semen for international export orders and are really excited to have received interest from industry-leading operations in Europe, New Zealand and the US," Mr Bowen said.
Following collection, Power Town will slot into the Bowen Downs stud as a heifer bull.
"While he's got that growth and all that power, he's also got a low birth weight and pretty good calving ease figures, so we're pretty confident in his ability to be a heifer bull," Mr Bowen said.
"I see him as the type of bull that I'd be pretty proud, in five years time, to look back at my pedigree list of all my females and see him in every single one of them because I think he's a really sound base to base your herd around and then breed on from there.
"I think there's a lot of good in that bull and he'll be here for the long-term."
