WORLDWIDE interest in Mayura's inaugural high performance production online sale, helped it achieve a world record for a beef semen package of $68,000 a straw.
Bulls topped at $90,000 and unjoined heifers reached $70,000 cementing the Millicent based stud as the national leader in the Wagyu breed.
Over the past 22 years the de Bruin family has extensively performance recorded its herd making the most of information gathered in its paddock to plate business and last Thursday this paid off - even amid the global pandemic.
Ninety five registered bidders from across Australia, as well as South Africa, Europe, the United States and Canada, jumped at the chance to select both semen, bulls and heifers from the elite end of Mayura's herd
Three packages of two straws of Mayura Itoshigenami Jnr - the carcase trait leader- were offered and sold for a $55,333 average.
It was the final of these three packages which made the remarkable $68,000, selling to Double 8 Cattle Co, Scottsdale, United States.
It was the first time in four years any Itoshigenami Jnr semen had been offered for sale.
Nine of 10 bulls sold to $90,000 averaging $46,444 and 13 unjoined heifers topped at $70,000, averaging $36,923.
Progeny of Itoshigenami Jnr were the stand out performers of the physical lots producing both the top price bull and heifer.
Lot 7, Mayura Prodigy, the highest genomic marble score bull in the catalogue was knocked down to Amberoo Wagyu, Toowoomba, Qld.
The 18-month-old, ET bred bull ranked in the top one per cent of the national herd on marble score, self replacing index and eye muscle area.
"Phenotypically he is a big, growthy bull with great structure, good depth and stretch- he is a great bull for any breed," Mayura managing director Scott de Bruin said.
The $70,000 highest price heifer, lot 4, Mayura P0486, had a double cross of Itoshigenami Jnr in its pedigree and was also a trait leader for on Breedplan for marble score and SRI.
The April 2018 drop sold to Charlie Pye, Gingie Pastoral, Walgett, NSW.
Marcel Merz from Switzerland was the volume buyer with five lots, including lot 25, Mayura Paramount, for $46,000.
It (the result) has given us a lot of confidence to make it an annual event.
- Scott de Bruin, Mayura managing director
Mr de Bruin was "ecstatic" about the result, especially after the uncertainty leading up to the sale and moving from a physical sale interfaced with Elite Livestock Auctions to solely an online sale.
"With everything happening with coronavirus we weren't feeling that confident but yesterday showed me two things; one that people are still happy to invest with a long-term vision and secondly it shows the level of respect for the Mayura brand and the performance breeding that has occurred here over the last two decades, he said.
"People have a level of confidence in Mayura's genetics and the cattle they produce which is highlighted by the accuracy and high ranking of our Breedplan figures"
Mr de Bruin said he was "humbled" by the support for their breeding program which has grown since the first imports of 25 full blood females to more than 3000 females.
"We presented the cattle to the highest standard we could and selected the highest ranking cattle on Breedplan we could which really helps our buyers select with confidence as the animal's performance can be accurately described," he said.
