ONE mayor in the Gulf country has been reelected unopposed, while others will come up against stiff competition in the March 28 local government election.
Further north in the remote Burke Shire, Ernie Camp has been reinstated for another term.
He was first elected to council as a councillor in 1996 and served as deputy mayor from 2004 to 2012, when he was elected mayor.
Cr Camp's mayoral bid was also uncontested at the 2016 election.
Gulf Cattlemen's Association president Barry Hughes has thrown his hat in the ring to run for the mayor of Etheridge Shire.
He is taking on current Mayor Warren Devlin, who is contesting the position for a third term.
Cr Devlin first served as mayor in 2008 for one term and was elected for a second term in 2016.
Nine other residents have nominated for the five councillor positions.
Croydon Shire Council Mayor Trevor Pickering, who has been mayor since 2012, is recontesting his position and will come up against Patrick Wheeler.
Ten other residents are contesting the four councillor positions.
Carpentaria Shire Council also has two mayoral candidates in current Mayor Jack Bawden who was elected in 2016.
His opponent is Fredrick Pascoe, who is a former mayor who served from 2009-2016.
Twelve people are contesting the six councillor positions.
