The Balonne River at St George has peaked and reached a high of around 12.3 metres shortly after nine o'clock on Thursday.
Balonne Shire Mayor Richard Marsh said the flood went as well as residents hoped it would, with no damage to any houses.
"It's been very successful from the point of view that there's been minimal damage," he said.
"There is some rubbish and debris on the riverbanks but housing wise no damage and community wise, people wise, no damage."
Councillor Richard Marsh said they will now monitor flows to towns downstream.
"Dirranbandi is the next concern and it will be a few days before it gets to there," he said.
The flood water has fanned and reached the Castlereagh Highway to enroute Dirranbandi (St George - Dirranbandi Road) earlier than expected and is now closed.
The Hebel Road from the southern side into Dirranbandi is also closed.
These road closures will isolate the township of Dirranbandi for some time.
