At RCS we stress the importance of the planning process. Planning for different scenarios using the best information we have at the time and, most importantly, enacting those plans on time to move the whole operation in the direction of the people's visions and goals. That heart and head stuff. We also use the analogy of the three-legged pot - the legs of land, production and business/finances are managed in balance to support the people, their values and aspirations.
The challenging season and feed shortage is continuing, with many areas now into several poor rainfall years back to back. Many are now dealing with fires. Most people we are in contact with have planned, and are continuing to plan, act, review, and replan as the season has progressed, for the stock, the business and the country. Unfortunately in all this there has been little mention of what plans are being acted on for the people.
More decision dates are coming up in the next couple of weeks and for some people there is a loss of confidence in decisions made, real fatigue and stress.
What can we do for the people and particularly ourselves?
- Be a little kind to ourselves. Every acted on decision you make is made with the best information and intentions at the time; it is only later that we can reflect on what could have done differently. Keep making decisions with the best information and best intentions.
- Plan people time and people things, be it relaxation, hobbies at home or away.
- Stay in contact, with family, friends, community, whoever you are comfortable with. If you find it hard to be in touch for yourself, do it for someone else. They could be looking for a call.
- Be aware and access funds and services from government and other organisations.
- Be brave enough to reach out for help when you need it. This could simply be a phone call or conversation with someone you feel comfortable talking to.
Remember the people really matter. Plan for them as you plan for all other areas of the business.
Acknowledge the good work you have done and don't be too hard on yourself for not foreseeing all the unknowns.
