Wandoan Show's Beef Bonanza on for second year

The competition is this year fielding entries in two categories, the 100 day steer division and the 70 day heifer division.

So far 100 steers and 60 heifers from across the Wandoan and Taroom area have been entered into the competition.

Prime cattle steward Shane Westman said the Beef Bonanza was added to the show as a way of reinvigorating the prime cattle show and had been met with great feedback in its first year.

Mr Westman said last year's entrants enjoyed getting the feedback on how their cattle had performed, with a 2.3kg average daily gain for the cattle fed during the competition.

"We announced the winners on the Friday of the show and we had managed to keep it pretty quiet up until then," he said.

"We've also managed to up the prize money this year to $10,000. It was $4000 for the steers last year."

Now organisers are gearing up for a successful second year.

"The season hasn't helped us but the numbers we've got are as we expected," Mr Westman said.

"Last year we had just the steer section and we received 100 bullocks from about 20 competitors.

"Last year we had a lot of different breeds entered and by the time they reached the 100 day mark, they all looked pretty good.

"The two winning pens were both Charolais cross cattle but we had a good variety of breeds and we do again this year."

The 2019 competition top accolade was tied between Brodie and Vicki Budd and Greg and Kel Kelly, while the top weight gain award went to Brian and Mardi Sands.

The steers will be delivered to Tim and Tammy Stiller's Weeroona feedlot near Guluguba on Sunday, with heifers due to enter the feedlot in early January.

Cattle will be processed on March 16, with the winners to be revealed at the Wandoan Show on April 3.
