BEVAN (Billy) Johnson, the unofficial king of racing in and around Miles, is planning on a move north.
It is believed Johnson hopes to shift his stable to Moranbah by Christmas, giving him easier access to regional and provincial tracks in central and North Queensland, including Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Mackay and Townsville.
"It might be a bit more central because we do a lot of travelling," he said. "You have to place the horses where you think they can win."
In the meantime, Johnson is fine-tuning a Country Cups quest for evergreen Fab's Cowboy, which claimed a 34th career win last weekend in the Strathmore Cup (1400m) at Blackall. He has entered Fab's Cowboy for the Ross Iverson Memorial Open (1400m) at Charleville on October 26.
The $105,000 Country Cups Challenge will be run at Doomben on November 30 and Johnson expects Fab's Cowboy will be among the highest weighted contenders, possibly earning an impost of 62kg.
To offset the weight, Johnson said he might look to a heavier jockey such as Brad Stewart, although multiple Group 1 winning rider Michael Cahill is also under consideration.
Interestingly, Cahill and Johnson shared the win of Hanover Square in the $175,000 Battle Of The Bush at Eagle Farm during the 2019 winter racing carnival.
Johnson has entered Arigold, a stablemate to Fab's Cowboy, for the $24,000 Gympie Cup (1600m) on October 26 in the hope of progressing to the big Doomben contest. The Gympie events doubles as a qualifying event for the Challenge.
Arigold is one of 13 nominations for the Gympie Cup.
Clouds, trained in Wondai by Lindsay Anderson, and Fort Myer, from the Kingaroy stable of Debra Corbett, are the only last start winners among the entries.
