LEADING Queensland bloodstock agent John Foote has done it again.
Yes: He selected the world's leading prize money steeple chaser Karasi.
Yes: He selected the dam of triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva.
Yes: He selected Yes Yes Yes who scored a record-breaking win in the $14 million The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
The only 3YO in the field, Yes Yes Yes beat the finest line-up of sprinters the world had to offer, sizzling to a track record-breaking win in the world's richest race on turf. What's more, big race jockey Glen Boss has been the rider of both Makybe Diva and Yes Yes Yes.
Yes Yes Yes raced in the slot of Chris Waller Racing and the master trainer was thrilled with the track record-breaking win. "It was a big decision to make. You've got a big international stud (Coolmore) in the horse who has backed my judgement and also the owners of the horse backing my judgement plus the slot holders," he said.
The slot holders comprise Chris Waller, the Ingham family and three prominent Queensland owners - Peter Tighe, Noel Greenhalgh and Nev Morgan.
Yes Yes Yes was bought for connections by John Foote for $200,000 at last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. After his Everest win the lightly raced Yes Yes Yes sent his earnings rocketing to more than $7 million. He was presented at the Gold Coast by respected NSW vendor Kitchwin Hills on behalf of breeder Brett Bradley from Arlington Park Racing.
The young sprint star is by Encosta De Lago's Group 2 winning son Rubick - himself also a Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase - from Sin Sin Sin who is a Fantastic Light half-sister to Hot As Hell. Yes Yes Yes is a half-brother to the stakes-performed mare Dee Nine Elle - yet another Magic Millions sold star. Their yearling half-brother to Yes Yes Yes by leading sire Sebring will be one of the pin up lots of the 2020 Gold Coast Yearling Sale with confirmation the youngster will be offered in the draft of Kitchwin Hills.
Fabulous effort by Cowboy
VETERAN galloper Fab's Cowboy has created a 'double double' in Racing Queensland's major country racing series.
In winning last Saturday's 1400m Blackall Cup he becomes the only horse to qualify for all four finals - the two Battle of the Bush finals in June and the Country Cups Challenge held in late November/early December. As a further mark of respect, he was also allocated top weight in the three finals held so far.
Fab's Cowboy and his Miles-based trainer Bevan Johnson have already won dual accolades at major racing awards functions this year. Fab's Cowboy was named 2018/19 Country Premiership Horse of the Year at the recent Racing Queensland Awards and earlier this year was named Outstanding Country Horse of the Year at the inaugural On the Bit Country Racing Hall of Fame awards held in Emerald while Bevan Johnson was the equivalent trainer on both occasions.
All up, Fab's Cowboy has now raced 75 time for 34 wins and 11 places to collect more than $264,000 prize money.
Spreading the love
AUSTRALIAN Racing Hall of Fame jockey Robert Thompson must love riding in far north Queensland.
All up this 2019/20 season, Cessnock-based Thompson has ridden at seven meetings at Innisfail, Cairns and Townsville for 12 wins and five seconds.
That includes the Northern Triple Crown Stayers Series riding The Harrovian to win the Townsville, Cairns and Cairns Amateurs Cups. In doing so, he had to reject riding We Just Love It on which he won last year's Cairns Cup for good friend Janel Ryan.
Ryan didn't hold any grudges. Instead she booked Thompson to ride We Just Love It in last Saturday's 2000m Innisfail Cup and his victory has qualified the 6YO gelding for the Country Cups Challenge final in Brisbane on November 30.
The Ryan/Thompson combination has been a potent mix over several years with at least two Cairns Cups winners We Just Love It (2018) and Seafight (2015) plus 2018 IGA Cup winner Binary. The duo also claimed the final spot in this year's TAB Battle of the Bush final with How Can I Help winning the postponed Mareeba heat reprogrammed to Cairns but did not accept.
A 6YO gelding by Love Conquers All from the Hennessy (USA) mare Husniyah, We Just Love It was a $17,000 purchase at the 2015 Magic Millions March yearling sale. He now has seven wins and six placings from 34 starts to return almost $167,000 prize money.
It was a lucrative trip north to Innisfail for Thompson with We Just Love It one of four winners for Thompson on the six-race program. He also combined with Ryan to win the 1200m Johnston River Open Sprint with Polar Blast while his other winners were The Frontier (Stephen Massingham) and Nadar Shar (Sharlee D'Avilla).
Nothing negative about Splitz
WHEN horse trainers talk about negative splits, they mean their horses finish the back half of their race faster than the first half.
For Toowoomba trainer Matt Kropp, there's nothing negative about his 5YO gelding Splitz whose name is an amalgamation of letters from his sire Sepoy and dam Snow Blitz.
Kropp acquired Splitz from Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan who won four races with him comprising a debut win as a 3YO at Ipswich in August 2017 and subsequent wins at Caloundra, Toowoomba and Warwick.
Transferred to Toowoomba earlier this year, Splitz also won first up for Kropp at Flinton on the western Darling Downs in April and has now won a further three times - the most significant being a last start win in the 1400m Stanthorpe Cup held last Saturday, which is a qualifying race for the Country Cups Challenge final. It was second-time lucky for Splitz as he finished 5.5 lengths second behind Ritchford in another qualifying race, the 1400m Tara Cup, held two weeks earlier.
There's also nothing negative about his pedigree. His sire Sepoy won four Group 1 races including the prestigious Golden Slipper/Blue Diamond 2YO double while his dam Snow Blitz is an unraced daughter by Zabeel of another Golden Slipper winner Polar Success. He was subsequently sold for $190,000 at the 2016 Magic Millions yearling sale on the Gold Coast and now has eight wins and 14 placings from 28 starts.
QTIS early payment option
OWNERS and breeders seeking to register their 2018 foals as QTIS horses can now do so, with Racing Queensland providing an early payment option.
The process provides a discounted first payment of $385 (GST inc) if made on or before October 31. Foals can still become QTIS registered horses if full payment is provided by July 31, 2020.
The 2020/21 QTIS features include:
- Standard bonuses across all 2YO and 3YO races held in Queensland (excluding black-type, feature and Magic Millions races);
- A 50 per cent increase to the standard QTIS bonus for 2YO, 3YO fillies and 4YO mares which win or place in a QTIS bonus race;
- A QTIS filly winning a Saturday Metropolitan QTIS bonus race takes home almost $80K for her connections;
- A win in a Midweek Metropolitan QTIS bonus race will see registered colts and geldings net over $28,000 and fillies about $33,000 (in races other than maidens);
- The winning purse of a QTIS bonus race at a non-TAB meeting for a registered colt, gelding or entire is $8500, over $10,000 for fillies and mares and is applicable to horses of all ages; and
- Access to the rich QTIS Jewel Raceday on the Gold Coast in March 2021 whereby QTIS registered horses will compete for more than $1.7 million.
Last month, RQ announced it would expand its highly successful thoroughbred breeding incentive scheme through the introduction of QTISx, which will provide bonuses on black-type and selected feature races conducted in Queensland.
To recognise - and reward - the Queensland breeding industry, RQ will also provide breeders' bonuses, with $10,000 for Group 1 races and $5000 for the remaining black-type races and features prescribed above.
With QTIS registrations now open, RQ CEO Brendan Parnell said the organisation was committed to supporting all facets of the Queensland racing industry including owners and breeders.
"QTIS has long been one of the success stories for Queensland racing and we continue to look at new ways to be able to support the industry. The introduction of QTISx is our latest enhancement, but we're committed to encouraging people to race, buy and breed in the Sunshine State," Mr Parnell said.
"Through our bonus system - and our discounted first payment option - I'd encourage those considering QTIS registration to do so in order to make themselves eligible to race for more than $12 million in bonuses," he said.
