Tuesday's Roma store sale was a major milestone for the saleyards, marking 50 years since the first official sale at the facility.
To celebrate half a century of operation, selling fees were reduced by 50 per cent, with yarding numbers rising by 1070 head to 5430.
Cattle were drawn mostly from south west Queensland where dry conditions continue, with an increase in grown steer numbers, and prices mostly improved despite the mixed quality of the yarding.
Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 308c/kg and averaged 260c/kg, with steers in the 220 to 280kg range reaching 308c/kg, to average 270c/kg.
Steers weighing 280 to 350kg sold to 298c/kg and averaged 260c/kg, while steers 350 to 400kg made to 295c/kg and averaged 275c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400 to 550kg range hit 310c/kg and averaged 284c/kg.
Heifers under 220kg topped at 258c/kg and averaged 176c/kg, with heifers in the 220 to 280kg range reaching 262c/kg, to average 208c/kg.
Heifers weighing 280 to 350kg sold to 266c/kg and averaged 230c/kg, while heifers 350 to 450kg made to 265c/kg and averaged 225c/kg.
Cows in the 300 to 400kg range reached 224c/kg and averaged 140c/kg, while cows in the 400 to 500kg range reached 233c/kg and averaged 177c/kg. Cows over 500kg topped at 241c/kg, averaging 222c/kg.
The yarding included a quality run of 246 Santa-cross steers from Jim Scully, Carlow, Blackall.
Weighing an average of 261kg, the steers sold to a top of 298c/kg for $890/head, and an average of 294c/kg.
Beau Frame, Frame Rural Agencies, Blackall, said the cattle had been in strong demand from Taroom and Roma-based buyers.
Caberfeidh Partnership, Caber Feidh, Aramac, sold Santa-cross steers to 308c/kg, reaching a top of $1,573 to average $1,439. The Santa heifers sold to 276c/kg, reaching a top of $1,318 to average $1,157.
RH & RJ West, Roleen, Wallumbilla, sold Hereford-cross steers to 298c/kg, reaching a top of $1,491 to average $1,382. Acacia Nominees Pty Ltd, Bellarra, Surat, sold Angus-cross steers to 295c/kg, reaching a top of $1,398 to average $1,309.
TM Dawes, Barr Park, Roma, sold Charolais-cross steers to 295c/kg, reaching a top of $1,178 to average $1,072.
Seifert Belmont Reds, Flag Springs, Auburn, sold Santa heifers to 266c/kg, reaching a top of $810 to average $671. Bundulla Grazing Co, Brenian, Roma, sold Brahman-cross heifers to 258c/kg, reaching a top of $695 to average $549.
RG & B Mobbs, Wallambank, Bollon, sold Charolais heifers to 230c/kg, reaching a top of $704 to average $611. Hillview Grazing, Rocksville, Charleville, sold crossbred cows to 240c/kg for $1220.
