SMILING from ear to ear, McUtchen family patriarch James McUtchen proudly accepted the award for grand champion exhibit on Friday for his South Devon bull Jambili Nonu.
The 28-month-old bull, by Mjb United and out of Davelle Fearless Iris, weighed in at a whopping 1062kg and recorded a daily weight gain of 1.22kg and an EMA of 138sq cm.
The McUtchen's Jambili Belgian Blues & South Devons stud was also awarded champion female with their exhibit Bolinda Blossom L18, a four-year-old cow by Bolinda Famous and out of Bolinda Blossom H52.
Mr McUtchen said the family had grand plans for Nonu with the bull heading back into the paddock in the hopes of producing high quality progeny.
"We'll put him back over our stud and commercial cows to try and breed us a few led steers and the champion cow will hopefully breed us some good bulls down the track," Mr McUtchen said.
Like many cattle breeders, Mr Mcutchen said the Jandowae-based stud had fought against extremely dry conditions to compete at the Royal Queensland Show.
"We're very dry at home but we're going to try and enjoy ourselves while we're here."
Judge Tim Light, Lagoona Red Poll Stud, Armidale, praised the South Devon exhibits, with Jambili Nonu catching his eye from the get-go.
"He is a really game-changing bull with a heap of weight, power and length - a good, free-moving bull for the weight that he's got too," Mr Light said.
