Wagner's Risdon Cup Super Saturday 1 featured excellent, competitive rugby which now places the successful teams against the minor premiers in each grade this Saturday, August 10, in Goondiwindi.
The Roma Echidnas' president, committee and supporters are to be commended.
The major semi-final was an epic encounter between the second-placed Roma Echidnas and third-placed Toowoomba Rangers. A see-sawing battle ended at full time 32-32. An additional 10 minutes each way of extra time still couldn't split the teams. Golden point extra time saw Roma fly-half Ben Bright kick a 47 metre penalty goal. After 100 minutes of rugby, both teams deserved to win.
Roma Echidnas now earn the right to play the minor premiers, the Goondiwindi Emus, in the Wagners Risdon Cup qualifying final from 3.30pm at Riddles Oval. The winner marches directly to the August 24 grand final at Clive Berghofer Stadium.
Saturday's main curtain raiser from 1.45pm is a knock-out semi-final featuring USQ Saints and Toowoomba Rangers. In last Saturday's minor semi-final at Roma, the Condamine Cods played the USQ Saints. The lead changed three times during the match, before the USQ Saints prevailed 27-22.
In B grade last Saturday, second-placed Dalby Wheatmen defeated third-placed Warwick Water Rats 38-22. Dalby now earn the right to play minor premiers St George Frillnecks in this Saturday's qualifying final from 12.15pm. Last Saturday's minor semi-final saw the Goondiwindi Emus thrash the Toowoomba Rangers 78-0. Goondiwindi Emus will now play Warwick Waters Rats in the B grade elimination final from 12.15pm.
In C grade last Saturday, second-placed Dalby Wheatmen and third-placed Toowoomba Rangers had another nail-biter, with Rangers winning 40-36. Last Saturday's elimination minor semi-final saw the Toowoomba Bears prevailing 24-10 over the Roma Echidnas. This Saturday's C Grade qualifying final features minor premiers Goondiwindi Emus against the Toowoomba Rangers. Saturday's C Grade elimination final has the Dalby Wheatmen up against the might of the Toowoomba Bears.
The Emilee Cherry Cup Open Women's Sevens see the second-placed Dalby Wheatchix up against the Condamine Codettes in the major semi-final at 1.40pm. Then Saturday's elimination final featuring St George Filly Frillnecks against the USQ Saints will be played at 2pm. Saturday's qualifying final features the minor premiers, Toowoomba Bears playing against the winner of the major semi-final at 2.20pm. Then we have in the elimination semi-final with the winner of the elimination semi-final against the loser of the major semi-final at 2.40pm.
