A polled, red factor son of Kandanga Valley Jericho sold for the $14,000 top price at John and Roz Mercer's annual Kandanga Valley bull sale at Warravale, Kandanga near Gympie on Saturday.
In fact, all four high selling bulls were by their lead poll sire Kandanga Valley Jericho (P), which was represented by eight sons for a $7563 average.
The Mercer family's 16th annual on-property fixture saw a total of 59 bulls average $4975 comprising 24 Charbrays which averaged $4854 and 35 Charolais average $5057 with a top of $14,000 representing a clearance rate of 70 percent.
Repeat buyers dominated the market and were keen to secure proven, consistent genetics which reliably produce progeny with growth for age and optimum finishing ability.
Typical of these return clients were south western commercial beef producers Elaine, Vaughn and Natalie Pampling, Derbyshire Downs, Augathella, who were accompanied by Roma TopX agent Carl Warren.
The Pampling family outlaid the $14,000 top money for Kandanga Valley Nightingale (P) (R/F), a son of K V Jericho with 5.2 for intra muscular fat percentage, scanned 10 and 10 for P8 and Rib Fat and 40cm in his scrotal circumference.
They also paid the $13,000 next best money for another Jericho son in K V New Age (R/F), a quiet natured, deep bodied, 20-month-old youngster with a good milk figure of plus nine. The Pamplings completed their trifecta with Kandanga Valley N'Everest, another polled red factor Jericho son at $7500.
The Pampling family sell their steer progeny as weaners through Rockhampton and wanted to increase the weaning weights of the progeny from their Brahman cross cows.
Other long-standing clients included Greg and Shirley Callander, Colston Park, Sarina who bid the $11,000 top Charbray money for Kandanga Valley Nazaire, the impressive generation bred 24-month-old son of former Brisbane grand champion in Kandanga Valley Jesuit.
Mr Callander said Nazaire ticked all the boxes in terms of growth, structure, temperament and performance and he liked his selections to be around the 50/50 Brahman content.
"We are situated in the ranges around 27 kilometres west of Sarina and the Kandanga Valley cattle are bred in similar country so we know they will handle the going," Mr Callander said.
The Callanders ended up with 11 Charbray bulls for a $5833 average.
Other regular buyers included Karremm Quarries of Cleveland, Brisbane with four for a $4250 average, Eskdale Cattle Pty Ltd, Eskdale with six at $4333, Ray Smoothy of Woodford with three for a $6000 average and interstate buyer Peter Everingham of Casino, New South Wales with two for a $4500 average.
Included in the Ray Smoothy order was the $8000 high priced Kandanga Valley Jericho son in Kandanga Valley Napoleon (P) which weighed in at 870kgs at 22 months of age. Napoleon displayed a great nature, sleek coat and moved freely around the ring and was ranked in the top five and 10 percent of his breed for growth EBVs.
