The second-last round of the 2019 Wagners Risdon Cup regular season was held last Saturday, and the top five placings on the ladders for A, B and C grades will determine who competes in the finals series, headlined by Super Saturdays on August 3 and 10.

August 10 is already confirmed for Riddles Oval, with Goondiwindi Emus the minor premiers). The preliminary finals follow on August 17, and the Wagners Risdon Cup grand finals will be played on Saturday August 24 at Toowoomba Sports Ground (Athletic Oval).

Super Saturday 2 on August 10 will feature the qualifying and elimination finals for the Emilee Cherry Cup Open Women's Sevens at Goondiwindi, then onto the combined preliminary and grand final, which is the culmination of a great season for senior men, Open Women's 7s and unique to 2019, will feature the Downs Rugby Awards both in a special ceremony upstairs and on-field before A grade kick-off.

Last Saturday featured a see-sawing battle at John Ritter Oval, Dalby, where the sixth placed Wheatmen were desperate to keep their finals hopes alive in front of their Old Boys Day, playing against the third placed Toowoomba Rangers. With scores locked up at full time, Rangers conceded a penalty, and Dalby unfortunately missed the penalty goal attempt for a 24-24 draw.

Roma Echidnas travelled to play the Gatton Blackpigs to further secure their second place on the ladder, and they did just that with open play from both teams passing the ball around in free-flowing rugby. Roma defeated Gatton 52-13, to earn five precious competition points (including bonus point).

USQ Saints won convincingly at Heritage Oval, securing a 42-14 bonus point win over the Toowoomba Bears.

The Wagners Risdon Cup Ladder with one round to go this Saturday, is as follows: 1. Goondiwindi Emus on 62 pts, 2. Roma Echidnas on 44 pts 3. Toowoomba Rangers on 32 pts, 4. Condamine Cods on 31 pts, and 5 USQ Saints on 30 points.

Only the top five teams are eligible to compete in the finals series in A, B and C grade men's, and the Emilee Cheery Cup Open Women's Sevens.

Remember, the coveted 2019 Downs Rugby Awards will be incorporated (only in 2019) during the Wagners Risdon Cup Grand Final Day on Saturday August 24 at Toowoomba Sports Ground/Clive Berghofer Stadium/Athletic Oval.
