Round 13 of the Wagners Risdon Cup last Saturday featured excellent rugby while also supporting charities and excellent social events.
At John Ritter Oval, Dalby, the Wheatmen played from juniors all the way through to their seniors on a great day of rugby which raised close to $10,000 for the Jelly Baby Charity for the plight of Type 1 Diabetes in front of 350 spectators. Dalby A grade trumped the Gatton Black Pigs 45 - 14.
The Dalby Wheatchix showed their support for the day out at Roma Rugby Races wearing their special Jelly Baby Shorts. Over 2000 people attended this unique fixture of a rugby field in the middle of a horse racing meet, which was an excellent social event on the calendar.
In A grade, Condamine Cods secured a close 18 - 14 victory over the Roma Echidnas.
At Riddles Oval, Goondiwindi hosted their annual ladies day with more than 1000 people in attendance. The very successful day was highlighted by the 200th match played by Sam Tweedy. The Goondiwindi Emus in A grade romped over the under strength Toowoomba Rangers 67 - 3. Goondiwindi Open Women's 7s side celebrated two welcome victories on the ladies day.
The Wagners Risdon Cup ladder after 13 rounds out of 18 has further strengthened Goondiwindi Emus' lead leaving them 22 points clear of the Roma Echidnas in second place, closely followed by the Toowoomba Rangers one point behind. The race between Roma or Rangers for a Super Saturday birth is hotly contested.
The Emilee Cherry Cup ladder after five rounds sees the double reigning premier Toowoomba Bears ahead by 15 competition points over the Condamine Codettes. Dalby Wheatchix are in third position followed by St George Filly Frillnecks and the Warwick Water Rats.
We are now eight days away from the opening ceremony of the 2019 Teenage Boys' State Championships at Downlands College. We also welcome the Northern Territory in under 12s, 14s and 16s to make 840 total participants vying for selection in the City Country Championships. Downs Rugby is looking to repeat championships success off the back of the under 12s winning last year.
