A powerful Santa Gertudis bull has been awarded the grand champion in this year's Farmfest Battle of the Bulls stud cattle competition.
Rosehill Norman 31, who was the supreme interbreed exhibit at Toowoomba Royal Show, triumphed again at Farmfest as grand champion, after first taking out the all breeds senior bull.
Owned by John and Rosemaree McCarthy, Clifton, Rosehill Norman 31 carried 1000kg into the ring, where he impressed judge Graham Brown, who is stud master at RSVP Droughtmasters.
Mr Brown said he was a "really good, solid all-round bull".
"There was plenty of thickness in him, good neck extension, sound on his feet and legs, not a lot to fault in him and that's really what we're doing, looking for the least amounts of faults in an animal that we can deal with," he said.
"He'd be the kind of bull, if we were in Santas, we'd be looking for something like that.
"I think the exhibitors will go quite well with him come sale time."
Mrs McCarthy said Rosehill Norman 31 would go onto the Ekka come August and would be sold in spring at the Big S Group sale at the Toowoomba Showgrounds in September, along with seven other of their bulls.
"He's probably our pick at the moment, but there's a variety of bulls in among the sale.
"We were hoping he would do well, but there's always good quality cattle out there.
"It all depends on what the judge thinks on the day."
The runner-up was Murray Grey bull Red Gum Nightcap, exhibited by Veronica and Jim O'Shea.
Mr Brown said Red Gum Nightcap had tremendous length and strength of spine.
"Exhibitors of him should also be very proud of themselves for producing such an article," he said.
Meanwhile the all breeds junior bull was won by a Square Meater, Sunset Park Ninety-Nine, exhibited by Julie Gillies of Pechey, Crows Nest.
Ms Gillies said they were "pretty stoked" to see the accolade go to Sunset Park Ninety-Nine, who also won champion British bull at the Oakey Show.
Farmfest livestock manager Pam Murphy said the quality of the bulls entered was excellent, especially given the dry conditions producers had been facing.
"The Battle of the Bulls and Fantastic Females is a way for exhibitors who are on site to showcase their product, that product being beef," she said.
