The officer in charge at the Aramac police station has thanked his community for its contributions to making a positive identification of and location for an unknown man walking the roads in the district.
Sergeant Bruce Jennings said thanks to their cooperation, police had been able to positively identify the man first reported squatting in shearers' quarters on a property to the north of the town over a week ago.
That sighting plus another nearby a few days later, and the reluctance of the man to speak with people offering assistance, put the rural community on high alert.
Sgt Jennings said at the time he wanted the community to be his eyes and ears, and he reported on Saturday that he'd been advised that the man had accepted a lift most of the way to Clermont.
"Through this we have been able to identify the man and can say that he's no threat to the community," he said.
"However, his behaviour is sufficiently unusual that I still recommend his mental health be assessed.
"I thank the public and encourage them to talk to police whenever they see something unusual."
He had received calls from Queensland and interstate in response to the original news of the mysterious sightings of the man.
"There are plenty of people with family members liable to do similar to this - it's not as unusual as you might think," he said. "I experienced it more frequently in the Gulf when I was stationed up there."
