Interest in Texas Longhorns from Queensland remains strong despite dry conditions, with the Trails West Texas Longhorns Sale in Roma over the weekend selling 37 out of 49 head for a 75 per cent clearance.
The sale grossed $62, 425 to average $1687, with stock coming from vendors Horseshoe B Longhorns, Brigalow Texas Longhorns and D 7 Spur Texas Longhorns.
Topping the sale were Charter Towers vendors Michael and Lynda Bethel of Horseshoe B Longhorns, who sold full-blooded heifer HBL Lonesome Miss to Barb Cormack, Guluguba, for $5750.
Mr Bethel said Lonesome Miss was a well-bred heifer in calf to USA bull Sam Chex, so they had been hoping she would fetch a good price.
"She ticked all the boxes in regards to Texas Longhorns traits... a good temperament, structurally built well with a nice big frame... she had it all in terms of colour, horns, temperament and structure," he said.
"We always think it's good to be able to sell cattle that you would be more than happy to have in your own herd.
"Anybody can have Texas Longhorns, they have a great temperament and they're easy to manage."
Wes and Hayley Offord of Brigalow Longhorns, Marmor weren't just selling but also bought the second top price full blood heifer D 7 Spur Martina 1668 from Gordon and Desley Davidson, D 7 Spur Texas Longhorns, Cheshire, Tambo for $4500, as well the third top price HBL Deltona from the Bethels for $4250.
John and Megan Hoare of Yennel Longhorns, Tasmania, bought up big at the sale to take home 11 head, averaging $1765 a head.
Mr Hoare said it was well worth making the 4000km round trip for the sale in Roma and they were happy with the animals they were taking home for their breeding program.
"The quality was absolutely outstanding considering the conditions of the season," he said.
"We're very happy with two heifers we picked up from Brigalow Longhorns that are in calf to Sam Chex, a very good American bull.
"The general atmosphere around the Roma sale and camaraderie between vendors was great, it was a big family atmosphere.
"People are definitely curious about the breed... once you get one, you can't stop."
Most other buyers came from Queensland but Marie Klante from Girilambone, NSW, picked up four head and one steer went to Tim and Judy MacFarlane, Mataranka, NT.
The Bethels sold one bull and four heifers to average $3900.
The Offords sold one bull and five heifers to average $2050.
The Davidsons sold one cow (PTIC), five cows and calves, five heifers and 15 steers to average $1178.
