BUSH heroes who have helped others in the face of adversity will be honoured in the annual Royal Flying Doctor Service’s local hero awards.

The award recognises community members who have helped out in local emergencies before RFDS crews can assist.

RFDS (Queensland Section) CEO, Meredith Staib said the award gave the service the chance to say thank you to those who help to get them off the ground every day.

“The RFDS relishes the opportunity to show our appreciation for the generosity and support of emergency services, health workers, volunteers, fundraisers, admin superstars and all those in between,” Ms Staib said.

The awards major partners include Queensland Country Life, Ergon Energy Retail and Seven News Queensland.

Ergon Energy Retail executive general manager Cheryl Hopkins said Ergon customers and employees had supported the work of RFDS in Queensland for more than 19 years.

“Our involvement is important as it allows our people to be directly involved in recognising the work of some amazing people," Ms Hopkins said.

"We are thrilled to be able to provide the community grant again this year.”

The award recipients will be nominated from each of the nine RFDS Queensland Base regions – Brisbane, Bundaberg, Cairns, Charleville, Longreach, Mount Isa, Rockhampton, Roma and with finalists announced on May 22 at their local RFDS bast.

Nominees can include individuals, families and community groups.

One of the finalists will be named the Queensland Hero for 2019 at the RFDS Wings for Life Gala being held at the Royal International Convention Centre in Brisbane on July 27.

The overall winner will be presented with $7,500 towards improving health in their local community.

Nominations are now open and close on April 15. To nominate visit www.rfdslocalhero.com.au.
