Graziers and agents from the Western Downs have shown support for colleagues doing it tough in the north by donating the proceeds of cattle sold at Roma on Tuesday.
Roger and Jenny Underwood, Pine Hills, Wallumbilla donated two Droughtmaster cows with all proceeds going to the QCWA Public Rural Crisis Fund.
Purchased by Anne Webber, Mellish Park Grazing, Longreach for $3000 each, the Underwoods have matched that money to make a donation of $12,000.
Mrs Underwood said seeing pictures coming out of the north made them want to help, but they weren't sure how to go about it.
"Lots of people we know personally have been so affected by this whole weather situation, first of all the ongoing drought and then within a couple of days seeing everything wash away before their eyes," she said.
"I have had a background with QCWA, I'm a member of the Wallumbilla branch, my mother has been a member for over 60 years, and then her mother was a member too when it first started, so QCWA was our automatic choice to go to.
"We know it's going to a very good cause and that its not just going to be for the northern flood recovery, obviously we hope that it goes there, but it's also going to be helping people who are still in drought and it's probably going to be helping people down in the south-west Queensland area too.
"I know quite a few people have applied already so they probably already knew about the fund but it was just a good reminder that it was there."
Mrs Webber said being part of the tightnit community in the north made her family want to do anything they could to help people.
"We've been in drought for seven years, but we've gotten through it. Those guys have been down a really tough road too, but what they're going through is a helpless situation," she said.
Despite prolonged drought conditions at Neenah Park and Dahra in the Longreach region, Mrs Webber said the $6000 donation was a drop in the ocean compared to what people had lost.
Purchasing Neenah Park in 2010 as a fattening block, the family had a good season until 2012 but haven't had good rain since then.
"We haven't had any cattle since January last year," she said.
"Over the two places we normally run about 2000 head but we've got 17 at the moment.
"We had 114mm here at the house from this weather system and the herbage has greened up a bit, but not enough to bring any stock back."
Rob Brown, Dalmally Grazing Co, Roma also donated the proceeds from two heifers at the sale after hearing of what the Underwoods were doing and wanted to be involved.
Sold through Landmark Roma and MAA Roma, both agents and the Roma Saleyards waived their selling fees meaning 100 per cent of the proceeds will go to the fund.
