The Callide Dawson Beef Carcase competition is now open to all commercial and stud beef producers.

The competition, now in its 31st year, reached a milestone last year, with more than 10,000 carcasses judged, and $200,000 raised for local show societies over the time.

This year the organising committee is hoping more central Queensland studs nominate their breed genetics to the test in a feedlot situation.

According to organiser, Mike Bradshaw, they are aiming for 300 to 400 entries.

“Nominations are welcome from any areas in Queensland,” Mr Bradshaw said.

“With many different breeds and crossbreeding, it will make the hotly contested weight gain section very interesting.”

He said there would be a few changes this year, including the class placings increased be given from first to fifth, in order to reward beef producers for their efforts.

Classes include trade 70 days grainfed cattle and there are separate classes and judging for steers and heifers. All trade cattle must be HGP free.

Trade cattle weights are between 320-420 kg while entry weights for the export 100 day steers is between 420-480 kg.

Nominations close on February 20, with cattle delivered to Warnoah Feedlot, Theodore, on February 28.

Cattle can be inspected at a mid term field day at Warnoah Feedlot on May 3.

Last year, the grand champion prize was awarded to self-confessed carcase competition junkie, Girlie Goody, Malakoff, Monto.

The Murray Grey cross steer entered Warnoah Feedlot, Theodore at 388 kilograms and had a final live weight before processing of 510 kilograms.

Ms Goody has been entering the Callide Dawson Beef carcase competition since it started 30 years ago.
