AWI has collaborated with MLA, The Graham Centre, The Murrumbidgee Landcare Incorporated, the South Australian Grain Industry Trust and local and state Government organisations to create the Australian Best Practise Management Mannual 2018 to help producers address infestations of silverleaf nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium).
A weed that reduces production in crop and pasture enterprises throughout the Australian wheat-sheepzone, silverleaf nightshade was classified as a Weed of National Significance (WoNS) for Australia in 2012.
The new manual guides producers in the best way to manage the infestation of the weed.
Stopping the spread of silverleaf nightshade into clean land is a priority to minimise future production losses, but the manual also details the best practises to use when the weed is already established.
Some of the management practises include sheep quarantine and effective surveillance strategies whilst if infestation has already occurred, herbicide eradication treatments should be added to the management plan.
