Noted Capella horseman, Steve Comiskey, Lyra Park, claimed his second covet Gold Cup after the finals of the Warwick Gold Cup campdraft on Sunday.
To claim victory, Steve astride Broomfield Stylish Diamond and fellow competitor Sam Knight on board O’Lara, faced a run-off as they both had an aggregate of 268 points each after the third round was held.
“I was feeling great and confident going into the final – but I didn’t think I would win,” Steve said.
“It really is a great feeling and a honour to win it for a second time.”
“Sam Knight was definitely a strong competitor, but he was certainly unlucky in the run-off, and I felt for him.”
Steve paid tribute to his nine-year-old mare, Broomfield Stylish Diamond, owned by himself and his wife.
“ I have won four novice drafts on her, and this was her first time in an open draft, and she tries her heart out,” he said.
The Comiskeys bought Broomfield Stylish Diamond as a four-year-old through the Landmark Classic sale in Tamworth from breeder John Peel.
By One Stylish Pepto from the mare Forever Diamonds, the Comiskeys paid $20,000 at auction.
Steve is no stranger in the winning circle and won his first Warwick Gold Cup in 2009 riding Lyra Park Delta.
In 2015, he was placed second to Ben Tapp on Acres of Roses, in the Warwick Gold Cup, again riding Delta, while last year, he was again second to Troy Palmer, who won the cup riding Who’s Divine.
