WORK is well and truly underway on what is destined to become a jewel in the Western Downs; the Chinchilla Botanic Parklands.
Construction began in June on the $5.9 million project which is being co-funded by the Western Downs Regional Council and the State Government.
The 4.2 hectare project will feature expansive garden areas, plus a stage, youth play precinct, water play area, amenities, picnic shelters, a wedding pavilion, plus numerous areas dedicated to specific plants and flora.
Indigenous cultural history, the railway heritage of the site and a Megafauna Discovery Space that pays homage to Chinchilla’s ‘giant wombat’ mega-marsupial of old are all included in the design.
An amphitheatre with capacity to accommodate 1500 guests in the lawn space and demonstration gardens providing interactive inspiration for backyards across the district will also be incorporated.
Western Downs Regional Council mayor, Paul McVeigh, said the Parklands would act as infrastructure and tourism attraction for the region as well as showcasing the liveability of the Western Downs.
“Delivering this wonderful community garden project with the State Government is the fruition of a concept that was first canvassed back in the 1970s and we’re very pleased it’s been such a successful partnership," Mr McVeigh said.
“The scale and diversity of what will be on offer in the 4.2ha Chinchilla Parklands is a first for our region.”
