Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced a boost in drought assistance from the Queensland Drought Appeal.
Originally capped at $5000 per family, the Premier has today lifted the limit to $7500.
It comes as the appeal tally climbs beyond $2.8 million.
“Everybody knows there are families out there doing it incredibly tough,” the Premier said. “But we need to do more. Just last week our Parliament House fundraiser collected $120,000.”
Minister for Agriculture, Mark Furner, said the response from the community had been incredible.
“Not only have we seen businesses making generous donations to the appeal, but we have also seen everyday Queenslanders digging deep to help our drought-stricken communities,” Mr Furner said.
“Every cent raised is going to help Queensland farmers and this raising of the limit by the Premier will make a real difference on the ground for families in regional Queensland.”
Queensland Country Women’s Association president, Joy Coulson, welcomed the Premier’s boost in assistance.
“An increase will help process applications where exceptional circumstances would warrant higher funds granted to a particular applicant,” she said.
The Queensland Drought Appeal was launched in August.
