A SPECTACULAR scrub fire which lit up the banks of the Balonne River at St George last night was quickly contained.
The vegetation fire started near the Balonne Highway at the intersection of St George Street and Whyenbah Road about 6.30pm.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said when crews arrived they found a small area of grass and scrub on fire.
The fire-fighters did some back-burning to contain the fire, which posed no threat to properties.
One crew had contained the fire within and hour.
Meanwhile, a fire in the Lockyer Valley yesterday is now under control.
The large fire broke out at Grantham just after 3pm yesterday and properties were at risk.
That fire prompted fire-fighters to issue a watch and act warning, with residents advised to keep up to date with the fire and ensure they were prepared to leave.
The fire travelled from Philps Road toward the Warrego Highway and Bowtells Road, prompting the closure of the highway at 3.50pm.
Firefighters commenced back-burning to preventing it from crossing the Warrego Highway while containment operations prevented the fire impacting Bowtells Road.
Crews continued to back-burn along the Warrego Highway and at 5.50pm the eastbound lanes were open to traffic while the westbound lanes remained closed.
Crews remained on the scene late into the night to monitor the fire, but at 8am this morning they were no longer required in the area.
