Steady bidding on quality lots saw the 16th Annual Roma Poll Hereford Bull Sale reach a top of $16,500 at the Roma Saleyards on Monday.
Extra competition via the online platform, Elite Auctions helped 30 bulls sell for an average of $5416 at the multi-vendor sale but couldn’t tip the clearance past 65 per cent.
Selling agent, Steven Goodhew, PJH Livestock and Property Roma, said the tough season played a key role in the sale result.
“I felt we had a very good line-up of bulls but the season was against us a bit with people not in the market for too many bulls,” he said.
“We had about 20 registered buyers and more online but we probably just lacked one or two of the usual bulk buyers. Having Elite Auctions in the sale was certainly a positive. The top price bull was purchased online by a NSW buyer.”
In fact, the top price bull was snapped up by James and Nicki Pearce, YavenVale Poll Herefords, Wagga Wagga, NSW for $16,500 from Amanda and Ivan Burcher, Binara Poll Hereford Stud, Goondiwindi.
28-month-old Binara Mauser M025 was among the heavier bulls in the draft, weighing in at 922kg.
He boasted a P8 fat measurement of 16, Rib Fat of 12 and an EMA of 134sq.cm. He also had one of the largest scrotal measurements in the offering at 41.5cm.
It was a double celebration for the Burchers who were also marking their 35th wedding anniversary.
Mrs Burcher said Binara Mauser had attracted solid interest.
“I just liked the fact that he has real eye appeal, a tremendous carcase, he’s long and has got good figures,” she said.
Binara Poll Herefords was the volume vendor, selling 16 bulls for an average of $5843.
Fellow vendor, Trefoil Park and Little Trefoil Poll Herefords, sold 5 bulls for an average of $5900 while Kalem Poll Hereford Stud sold two averaging $5250 and Jacana Poll Herefords sold seven for an average of $4142.
