The National Braford ‘Sale of the Future’ bull sale has topped at $28,000 twice and attracted a large gallery of stud and commercial beef cattle buyers.
With dry conditions prevailing across many part of Queensland, bull buyers were more selective when purchasing.
But, that didn’t stop repeat buyers chasing the top quality Braford genetics on offer with the first bull to reach $28,000, lot 58 Carinya Target (030) (P117796 B) (P), selling to the purchaser of last year’s top priced bull at National Braford Sale, Brian and Trinket Anderson, Glenduan, Theodore.
The top priced sire was by polled bull, Carinya Nebraska, and out of one of Carinya Stud’s top performing cows.
“Our focus is to continue developing a high quality female base for our commercial cattle operation,” Mr Anderson said.
“Docile cattle temperament, consistently high fertility, and good conformation are the main traits we focus on and we find Amor family’s Brafords can help us deliver that in our beef cattle operation.”
The Carinya Nebraska bull was offered for sale by John and Jackie Amor, Carinya Braford Stud, Dulacca.
The Anderson family will now put their new Carinya Nebraska sire to work across a select mob of commercial Braford cows with a focus on breeding high quality weaners to grow out into the bullock and trade steer beef markets.
“We also look to select the best heifer progeny to breed-up into studbook registered Braford females,” Mr Anderson said.
The 30-month-old Carinya Nebraska bull entered the sale ring at 916 kilograms with an eye muscle area of 135 centimetres squared, plus 13 millimetres of fat on the rump and 11 millimetres of fat on the rib area. The sire also recorded a scrotal measurement of 39 centimetres.
The Anderson family also purchased lot 131, Carinya Trueman (026) (P117805 B) (P) bull, that was out of the same Carinya stud cow as the top priced bull they bought at last year’s National Braford bull sale at Gracemere. The sire was purchased by the Anderson family for $18,000.
The 26-month-old Carinya Trueman bull weighed 838 kilograms with an eye muscle area of 127 centimetres squared, plus 12 millimetres of fat on the rump and 7 millimetres of fat on the rib area. The bull also recorded a scrotal circumference of 39 centimetres.
The second bull to reach the $28,000 price tag was lot 133, Carinya Treaty (024) (P117806 B) (P), who was purchased by longtime National Braford bull sale supporters, Paul and Janeice Anderson, Eureka Grazing, Alpha.
The sire was once again offered by the Amor family with the bull sired by polled Little Valley Kahu bull.
The 24-month-old Carinya Treaty bull entered the sale ring at 992 kilograms with one of the best eye muscle area scans in the sale draft of 142 centimetres squared, plus 16 millimetres of fat on the rump and 11 millimetres of fat on the rib area. A feature of the bull was his high intramuscular fat percentage at 5.4 per cent and the sire also recorded at scrotal measurement of 39 centimetres.
The top priced Treaty bull will now go to work on the Anderson family’s 25,000 hectare property across Braford cows to produce a line of commercial bulls for use in their cattle operation.
Overall, the 2018 National Braford bull sale averaged $6946 with a sale gross of $903,000. In total, 130 bulls were sold out of the 169 head offered for a clearance rate of 77 per cent.
