Innovations in UAV (Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle) automation – commonly known as drones – is the fastest growing sector of the aviation industry and has huge potential in the agriculture and construction industries through to resources and local government.
This potential will be explored at the second Dalby Drone Industry Forum on Monday, September 24.
Western Downs Regional Council mayor Paul McVeigh said the forum will enable businesses to reach new heights by looking at current and new ways to use drones.
"These days, owning a drone is becoming much more affordable as technology advances, but drone users need to realise that there are regulations to be followed, no matter the size of the drone and what you want to use it for," he said.
"That is why this forum is so useful, not only is there the opportunity to hear from experts in the field, attendees can also network with other drone users and see what is being done across our region, both for hobby enthusiasts and commercial operators."
Former CASA senior manager, Jim Coyne is the guest MC and keynote speaker at the forum.
The technical director of UAV International since 2014, Mr Coyne brings a wealth of specialised experience in the world of drones. He’s been working in UAV research, regulation and development across the Asia Pacific for over a decade.
Other speakers include Stefan Hrabar, a principal research scientist with over 16 years' experience in drone autonomy and founding member of CSIRO’s Data61 Robotics and Autonomous Systems Group, one of the leading robotics research groups in the world.
Luke Gumley, CASA's branch manager of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems will be discussing the latest drone rules and regulations. Prior to CASA, Luke was the chief pilot and chief operating officer of a large flight training organisation involving 40 aircraft and 45 flight instructors.
Attendees will also be able to view displays from more than a dozen leading companies at the exhibitors forum including Telstra, Airborn Insight, Fly the Farm, Remote Aviation, InFarm and Universal Drones.
The exhibitor displays will cover training, provision of drone systems, software, mapping and surveying, agricultural services such as pest spraying and precision agriculture, and emergency services.
The afternoon session will include a Q&A session with panel members, and there will be an opportunity to view some high-tech drone demonstrations (weather permitting).
