Volume buyers dominated at the Advance Annual Bull Sale at Roma on Friday, with demand for quality genetics pushing the sale to a top of $11,000.
Of the 85 Angus, Red Angus, and Charolais bulls offered, 62 sold for a 72 per cent clearance rate and $5725 average.
Pat and Scott Bredhauer, Lambert, Charleville, paid the top price for Advance Mascot M116 from vendors, Bernie and Janice Hayward, Advance Charolais, Allora.
The 2016 winter-drop Charolais bull tipped the scales at 950 kilograms and measured 42 centimetres in scrotal circumference, with and estimated breeding value (EBV) of 138cm for eye muscle area (EMA), an intramusucular fat (IMF) of 4.2, and seven millimetres of rib fat.
Scott Bredhauer said the softness and presentation of the bull was what attracted them.
“He's obviously a big animal, but carried himself well, had good length, a fair bit of size, and good fat coverage on him so he's going to be a softer type bull and breed a bit of softness back into our progeny, so we're happy with him,” he said.
“He's polled which was the main thing for us as well as being white, because we're putting him over white pure Brahmans so we can get fifty/fifty for our Charbray stud.
“He was the pick of the Charolais for us for what we wanted to use him for.”
A second-top price of $10,000 was reached twice, again for Charolais bulls, with W Jefferis and D Priddle, Oakey, purchasing Advance M18, and Kilkenny Charolais, Verena Park, Taroom, taking home Advance M21 from vendors, Stephen Hayward and Kellie Smith, Advance Charolais, Allora.
Top volume buyer on the day was Brett Griffin, Syden, Yuleba, who purchased 11 bulls, made up of four Angus, six Red Angus, and one Charolais bull, for a top price of $8500 and average of $5045.
Eungy Pastoral Company, Milparinka, Blackall, took home nine bulls for a top price of $9000 and average of $7722, while Campo Santa Grazing, Roma, purchased six bulls for a top price of $8000 and average of $6416.
Elders Studstock auctioneer, Michael Smith, Toowoomba, said it was a solid sale.
“In a typical dry year, people are chasing a better quality bull and that was evident today,” he said.
“The cattle that had a bit more pedigree and a bit more performance about them sold very well.”
The sale was conducted by Landmark Roma and Elders Roma, with Colby Ede, Landmark, Toowoomba, and Michael Smith, Elders Studstock, Toowoomba, taking the bids.
