MOONGOOL Stud at Yuleba monopolised the Charolais ring at this year’s Royal Queensland Show, winning almost all of the champion ribbons, including both the grand champion bull and grand champion female trophies.
The Price family’s sweep included both senior and junior champion bulls, senior cow and junior heifer and all the reserves ribbons bar two in what studmaster Ivan Price described as his best outing since winning the interbreed in 2013.
In a clear indication of the influence Moongool genetics are having on the Charolias world, both the reserve junior champion bull and the reserve junior champion heifer were also by Moongool sires.
“It’s just great to have our cattle recognised,” Mr Price said. “We’ve been lucky enough to enjoy plenty of success in Brisbane, but today is right up there with winning the interbreed.”
The Trevor Cottee Memorial grand champion bull was Moongool Monolopy, a poll by the red factor sire Temana Golden Logie and from the poll dam Moongool E296. Monopoly entered the ring weighing 940kg, boasting a 136sq cm eye muscle area and a 1.49kg average daily weight gain.
Monopoly is set to have a long show career ahead of him. Before advancing to become the senior champion he won the entry level 20-22 month senior class.
Reserve senior champion bull was Moongool Mr Money, the winner of the 24-27 month class. The impressive Mr Money entered the ring at 1068kg and scanned with a 142sq cm eye muscle area and a 1.41kg average daily weight gain.
Junior champion bull was Moongool Network, the winner of the 16-18 months class. Network was produced by Airlie Hanz and from Moongool Statlice. The 812kg youngster had a 133sq cm eye muscle area and a high performance 1.55kg average daily weight gain.
Reserve junior bull was 4 Ways Nougat, the very well conformed winner of the 18-20 months class. Bred by Moongool Jag and from 4 Ways Zig, Nougat paraded at 624kg.
Other class winners included Advance Matlock M8 (P) (RF) (Elstow Jim Beam (P) (RF) shown by David Jefferis and D Priddle, Oakey, which won the 22-24 months competition. Glenlea Muscleman M37E (P) with a 141sq cm EMA was named the winner of the 27-30 month class. He was exhibited by Glenlea Beef, Casino. Warner and Company, Moore Creek, NSW, had the 12-14 months junior bull winner with Ashlin Next Edition.
Moongool also won the pair of bulls class and the breeder’s group. The progeny stakes group competition went to David Whitechurch’s 4 Way Charolais, with the team of three bred by Moongool Jag.
Moongool won the interbreed in 2013 when Moongool Gunsmoke (P) was named the champion of champions bull. The son of Byson C-3 (AI) from Moongool Primrose attracted the attention of the 18 judges officiating in the judging.
Charolais females
AN outstanding bull calf at foot helped secure the grand champion female for Moongool Poppy 12 at the Royal Queensland Show.
Judged by Warren Miller, Jaydena, Emerald, the 30-48 old proven matron by Airlie Easter gave the Price family, Moongool Charolais the grand champion female/bull double in the competition contested by 105 cattle.
The Prices also secured the junior champion female award with Moongool Oregan 9 (AI), the 16-18 months class winner. Oregon 9 is by Silverstream Evolution E168. Reserve senior champion went to Moongool Fanmail 8 (RF), the second place-getter to Poppy 12 in the 30-48 months class.
The 18-20 months class winner, 4 Ways Noisette M83E (P) (RF), exhibited by David Whitechurch, Inverell, was named reserve. The attractive heifer was bred by Moongool Jag.
Mayfield Ridge Nikita won the 8-12 months class, shown by Mayfield Ridge Charolais, Fairney View. Ron and Wendy Johnstone family, Milford Charolais, Beaudesert, had the 12-14 months winner with Milford Charissa, a poll by Palgrove Haulmark. Sisters Tania Sainsbury and Nicole Hartwig, Monto, exhibited Tanic Nadia to win the 14-16 months class. Nadia was by the poll Moongool Gunsmoke, the 2013 Champion of Champions interbreed bull.
Colinta Holding’s Colinta Mannequin won the 20-22 class. David and Helen Reid, Reid’s Charolais, Kingaroy, had the 22-24 months class winner with the poll, red factor female Advance Valeria M13. Tallegalla breeder Rodney Freeman’s RNJ’s Melody Gem topped the 24-30 months division.
