Ian and Anne Galloway had plenty of reasons to smile at the Hereford judging, when their sole exhibit, Cootharaba Xplicit was sashed senior and later grand champion Hereford bull.
This year marks the 90th year that Cootharaba Herefords has been exhibiting at the Royal Queensland Show and accumulating some 38 grand championships.
Judge, Stephen Peake, Bowen Poll Hereford Stud, Barraba, NSW sorted through his 37 entries and praised exhibitors, saying his task was not an easy one, particularly when selecting his grand champion winners.
He said Cootharaba Xplicit was an excellent example of the Hereford breed, and he has structural soundness and is a sire of the future.
With a weight of 1100kg and eye muscle area of 137 square centimetres, Cootharaba Explicit is a son of Hunday Hartland, who was bought by the Galloways at the Brisbane Royal Show three years ago.
“Hunday Hartland has really fitted very well with our breeding program and we are pleased with his progeny,” Mr Galloway said.
As the Galloways will not be having an on-property sale this year, Cootharaba Xplicit is for private sale.
The grand champion female was Glenwarrah Lass, exhibited by the Weller family, Welray Partnership, Nabiac, NSW.
Glenwarrah Lass, at just 12 months of age, was one of the youngest heifers on display, and the win was a lovely surprise for junior members, Drew and Riley Weller.
The Wellers recently purchased Glenwarrah Lass for their grandsons Drew and Riley for $1000.
“She is an outstanding heifer, with femininity and structural soundess,” Mr Peake said.
The senior champion female was Weetalabah Loyalty, exhibited with a five-week-old heifer calf at foot by Adrian and Julie Nixon, Dulacca.
Weetalabah Loyalty was the only senior female exhibited, and she was praised by the judge for possessing the qualities of a Royal show champion.
The reserve senior champion bull was Yagaburne Milton, exhibited by the Glasser family, Yagaburne Pastoral Co, Goondiwindi.
Yagaburne Milton, by Yagaburne Judge J278, weighed in at 950kg and had an eye muscle area of 129sq cm.
The junior champion bull sash was awarded to Te-Angie Naidoo, exhibited by Richard Ogilvie and Sons, Wongwibinda,NSW. He is a son of Mountain Valley Longbow and at 12 months of age weighed 534kg and had an EMA of 91sq cm.
The reserve junior champion bull was Kianma Ned, exhibited by Kianma Poll Herefords, Millthorpe, NSW, who earlier stood second in the eight to 12 month class to Te-Angie Naidoo.
Reserve junior champion female was Deejay Xaviera Cherry, exhibited by the Deejay Partnership, Casino, NSW.
