ALPA Queensland young auctioneers winner Brent Williams grew a passion for selling cattle when he rose to the occasion at a time where there was no one to take up the challenge.
Mr Williams holds his Chattel Auctioneer and Real Estate licenses, selling cattle weekly in Charters Towers and occasionally Mareeba.
He also sells properties for Elders real estate and conducts charity auctions.
Mr Williams said there was no family trait or childhood aspirations to pursue a career in the cattle yards but saw a demand in town.
“I wasn’t expecting to be an auctioneer by all means so it was a matter of it’s time to sell,” he said.
“There was no auctioneer in Charter Towers at the time so I stood up and from there it grew.”
Mr Williams was among nine other auctioneers who traveled to Brisbane to show their tricks of the trade at the Royal Queensland Show on Friday.
The 24-year-old said the win came as a shock.
“I feel on top of the world,” he said.
“I wasn’t expecting it so I’m very happy.”
Mr Williams thanked Elders during his acceptance speech for supporting him for the past five years and praised organisers and buyers for making the event possible to help young people improve their skills.
He said the talented young auctioneers were great on the day, bringing a very tough competition into play.
Mr Williams said he was in the agency game for three years before he moved from Melbourne to Mareeba and then settled in Charters Towers.
“I love being able to stand up and represent my clients on sale day and give them the best price I can,” he said.
Mr Williams said he enjoyed being able to present on sale day and talk at high speed.
“It is a challenge, you can get tongue tied very easily,” he said. “A lot of preparation is involved.
“I’ve been practising a lot of driving in the car and practising a couple of hours a day.”
Mr Williams aims to improve his skills as an auctioneer and achieve the best results for his clients.
