THE Breakfast Creek Hotel have again shown they aren’t afraid to open their wallets for a quality steak after paying $52/kg dressed weight for the grand champion steer of the Royal Queensland Show.
The Albion venue, assisted in bidding by Terry Nolan, Nolan Meats, Gympie, secured the grand champion and heavy weight champion steer owned by Shaun Daley and Julia Simmons, Clifton, during an auction.
The 538kg black steer, by a Limousin bull and out of an Angus female, was put onto feed 110 days ago and fitted by Stephen Hayward.
The hotel’s only purchase for 2017 will be served at a charity luncheon in September or October for about 200 people raising money for prostrate cancer.
Breakfast Creek Hotel Venue Manager Sam Gullo said they had never had any disappointment with their steer purchases.
“The company has been very good about it and given us a budget to work with every year,” he said.
“Sometimes we don’t always get him (the grand champion) but we always get something.”
The Breakfast Creek Hotel successfully purchased last year’s champion for $56/kg.
The 2018 auction attracted a number of supermarket and butcher buyers including Woolworths, IGA, Nolan Meats, Marcelford Meats, Bracken Ridge Tavern and Mick’s Meats.
The champion lightweight steer (384kg) owned by the McUtchen family, Diamondy, sold for $8.60/kg to Bracken Ridge Tavern.
Reserve champion lightweight (392kg) from the Nicholls family, Kyogle, was purchased by The Butcher Shoppe at Esk for $7.30/kg.
They also purchased the champion middleweight steer (466kg), again from Nicholls family, for $5.70/kg.
The reserve champion steer from the McUtchen family weighing 424kg was sold for $6.70/kg.
The reserve champion heavyweight steer (608kg) from the Nicholls family was purchased by Nolan Meats, Gympie, for $5.80/kg.
