The 2018 Callide Dawson Beef carcase competition grand champion prize has been awarded to self-confessed carcase competition junkie Girlie Goody.
The champion carcase was a Murray Grey-cross grainfed trade steer who was raised on Ms Goody’s property called Malakoff at Monto.
The steer entered Warnoah Feedlot, Theodore at 388 kilograms and had a final live weight before processing of 510 kilograms. The steer also recorded 10 millimetres of fat on the rump area and six millimetres of fat on the rib area with the carcase dressing out at a 55 per cent yield. The grand champion award was sponsored by Grenada Bazadais.
Ms Goody has been entering the Callide Dawson Beef carcase competition since it started 30 years ago.
“I’ve been lucky enough to win a couple of grand champion carcases in the early 2000s in this competition,” she said.
In total Ms Goody’s entered 18 head of grainfed cattle in this year’s carcase competition, which included two steers in the trade section, nine in the export bullocks section, and seven in the heifer trade section.
“It’s very exciting to win the carcase competition and it’s great to have the data feedback on my commercial cattle,” she said.
Overall, 596 head of cattle were processed at Teys Biloela plant for this year’s Callide Dawson Beef carcase competition, which is down slightly on last year’s record entry numbers of 613 head.
“It’s great to have solid entry numbers continue during a Beef Australia event year,” Mr Goody said.
