Hundreds of spectators travelled to Martin's Waterhole at Taldora Station 180 kilometres north of Julia Creek for the annual Saxby rodeo, campdraft and gymkhana last weekend.
The Saxby Round-Up featured a jam-packed three days, which included a barrel race, rope and tie, team roping, bulldogging, open bull and bronc rides, novice bull ride, station buck jump, calf rides and bullock rides.
With around 140 nominations this year, Will Durkin won the all-round cowboy title after accumulating points in both the rodeo and campdraft.
The event started on Thursday with the maiden draft that carried on through the afternoon.
On Friday, the action-packed events took centre ring – the Saxby mini workout, the junior draft and the maiden draft final along with the station buckjump – bringing a lively end to the day’s proceedings for the large crowd.
Saturday morning began with the Ken Daley Memorial open draft before a host of rodeo and campdraft events in the arena entertained the spectators with thrills and spills.
Emergency services were called in to airlift a rider who had been injured during an event.
Organiser Courtney Mulcahy said he had dislocated his elbow and possibly fractured his tibia.
Cloncurry’s Jack Banks won the bull riding event and two buckles, taking out the most prize money over the entire weekend, while his younger brother, Bill Banks placed in the steer ride.
Lee Moore won the rope and tie event and Justin Butz took out first place in the open bull bide.
Marvyn Remfrey won first place in the bulldogging event and the team roping event while Mark Walsh won the bronc ride.
