The Queensland Country Life Southern Beef Week open days being held on July 21-22 will see 14 studs scattered between the South Burnett to the Scenic Rim open their gates for visitors.
During the open days guests will be able to get a better understanding of the goals these outstanding stud producers are trying to achieve within their operations, get an early preview of cattle they’ll be offering at upcoming sales this year, and the opportunity to take home a handy bull or heifer.
Dave and Colleen Smith, Vale View Droughtmasters, Dernancourt, Goomeri, said having people being able to leisurely look at cattle in their own environment, while enjoying a drink and tucker fresh off the barbie, is a “priceless experience”.
“The open day is a great way to display our cattle that will be available at upcoming auctions and paddock sales, without them being crammed up in selling pens,” she said.
“It also gives potential clients the opportunity to inspect some of the sires, dams, brothers or sisters of our sale cattle as well as discuss our feeding regime, vaccinations and bloodlines.”
The Pender family, Boonderoo Brangus, Tansey, will be hosting their second QCL Southern Beef Week open day since shifting their stud from NSW.
Richard Pender said the event is perfect for providing visitors with a casual, no-pressure look at their stud and breeding program.
“It’s a way for our guests to take an informal look at what we’re doing, while we have a yarn over a coffee,” he said.
“We’ll have our latest genetics on display in the shape of some two-year-old calved heifers, as well as our Roma and Rockhampton sale bulls, and we’ll also have paddock bulls for sale.”
Dunlop Santa Gertrudis’ Scott and Rebecca Dunlop, Kia-Ora, Proston, said having the time to get to know people and their operations better and to learn what their individual bull requirements are is highly beneficial.
“The day also benefits the animals as they get exposed to a far greater amount of people than they have ever seen, and we also have the opportunity to make some private sales on the day.
The eight studs hosting property tours on Saturday, July 21 include: BJF Limousin; Boonderoo Brangus; Bryvonlea Droughtmasters; Cooinda Santa Gertrudis; Dunlop Santa Gertrudis; Marcella Angus; RSVP Droughtmasters; and Vale View Droughtmasters.
On Sunday, July 22 a further six studs will welcome guests, including: Amberwood Droughtmaster; Carabar Angus; Elite Cattle Co; Fairlight Speckle Park and Modern Pinzgauer; High Country Droughtmasters; and Springside Simmentals.
