Rugby and racing are dual winter traditions in Roma, and the ever-popular Roma Rugby Races combine these two favourite pastimes together to provide a great spectacle for onlookers.
Again this year the Roma Turf Club will unite with the Roma Rugby Union club to hosts a day of rucks and mauls around a five race program at Bassett Park, on Saturday, June 23.
Roma Turf Club secretary Jackie Erickson said the day is the first of the Roma Turf Club’s three meeting Winter Carnival.
“The prize money has been boosted to culminate in a TAB meeting at the end of July where the total prize pool is almost $200,000,” Ms Erickson said.
“The money on offer is sure to attract some quality thoroughbreds and ensure great racing throughout the winter season,” she said.
Spectators will also be able to take in the grinding forwards action of the Roma Echidnas pack as they square off against traditional rivals, the Condamine Cods in their 15 man rugby competition.
Women’s rugby will also be front and centre during the afternoon, as the Condamine Codettes, Roma Echicknas and Dalby Wheatchix bring their balls to the center oval and play Sevens rugby between gallops, providing a showcase for the poster sport of Australian Rugby, western Qld style.
“Boots are essential Rugby Race day accessories. Studs are required for those playing on field, hip boots will be uniform for the jockeys, and expect to see a fair bit of fur and leather in the annual Winter Fashions on the Field.
“Fashions are always judged by their rugby and racing appropriateness, with felt and the odd scarf also being essentials, attire such as fascinators aren’t really part of the expected part of the ensemble at this particular race meet.”
She said the day doesn’t finish with the sport.
Post-race and rugby action, we’ll have Route 33 performing, fresh from CMC Rocks and as the opening act at Suncorp Stadium for the Broncos game.
“They’ll be on the main stage and with only the slightest touch of coaxing, they’ll be prepared to belt out Horses, for the enjoyment of all in attendance.”
Ms Erickson said while the weather is more conducive to gas-heated snuggling (supplied) and warming beverages, those taking advantage of the free camping overnight will likely need to postpone their swag settling until after a work out on the dance floor.
“Midnight will be soon enough to brush the frost off the canvas and crawl into the sleeping bag.”
