Top honours in the CRT FarmFest 2018 Young Judges competition has been taken out by two Dalby State High students.
Year 9 student, Lauren Kelly, was awarded champion young judge after some tough competition against 105 other competitors on Tuesday afternoon.
Lauren said winning was overwhelming but she was excited to take home the champion ribbon.
“This was my first judging competition with the school show team this year, so it was overwhelming,” Lauren said.
“It was a great competition but extremely tough to choose the best bull.”
Young judge’s competition over-judge, Ben Toll, St Johns College, Dubbo, said the competition was tough, but Lauren was a standout.
“She spoke well, had the ability to compare the animals, was descriptive in what she said and was confident,” Mr Toll said.
“Lauren has a bright future in the beef industry.
“If she gets involved with the industry, not just junior judging but getting on the committees and putting something back into the system as well as being a competitor, I think that gives younger people a better understanding and more opportunities in the future.”
Mr Toll said it was great to see such strong competition in the young judging event at FarmFest 2018.
“These guys have to start somewhere and these types of events are outstanding to get your grounding and get a bit of an understanding, and then it's up to the kids to get involved and go further from there,” he said.
Fellow Year 9 student, Charleigh Tucker, Dalby State High School, took home the reserve champion ribbon.
