THE Dyno Nobel Queensland Outback Barbarians gathered at the Alliance Hotel in Brisbane on Thursday night to thank sponsors and supporters ahead of the team’s upcoming US tour.
MC and former Wallaby Greg Martin told the players touring and playing rugby was all about enjoying the experience.
“Wherever you go as a rugby player you instantly have 15 new friends at every club you visit,” Mr Martin said.
“Make the most of it. Play to win on the field and enjoy the wonderful connections that rugby provides no matter where you are in the world.
Dave West from the Gladstone Goats and Cameron Knights from the St George Frillnecks were named the team’s co-captains.
Youngest player on the tour Jai Blakey, Burdekin Canetoads, is responsible for ensuring the safety of team mascot Rusty the Blue Heeler..
The players were presented with their tour caps during the evening.
The team went through its paces at Ballymore under the instruction of coach Mick Bishop on Friday morning.
Games will be played against the:
DALLAS HARLEQUINS: recognised as a first class Division 1 side that is branching out into the professional circuit that is starting up in the US. Expect a very torrid game.
HOUSTON ATHLETIC: This team is also in the process of going professional. Another very tough game.
NEW ORLEANS RUGBY: They are already in the professional circuit. The day we arrive there will also be a Welsh Side in town to play them on the Sunday. We have never been successful against New Orleans but I hope that we can turn the tables this time. Be very aware.
TALLAHASSEE CONQUISTADORS: This team is struggling with numbers but with the help of the Florida State University Team they will put a competitive team on the park.
BOCA RATON BUCCANEERS: A Division 11 side but has been upsetting a lot of Div.1 teams lately.
BIRMINGHAM VULCANS: Another Div.11 side that is trying to break into Div.1. They will be more than competitive so be aware of the ambush.
LITTLE ROCK STORMERS: This is a high class Div.1 side. Remember, this is our last game on tour so I expect everyone to be a little jaded so be very aware. They will not want to loose to an Australian side.
The Queensland Outback Barbarians have only lost four games in the last 34 games on five tours.
