CRT FarmFest sees a return of working dog demonstrations in the Livestock Area this year.
Sponsored by ARTC, the working dog demonstrations feature highly regarded Kelpie breeders Karl and Catherine Hinschelwood, from Glendon Kelpies on a 65-hectare property at Clifton.
Karl has had sheepdogs for more than 40 years and believes in keeping the “natural” instinct within his dogs.
“Too many modern day dogs, and in particular border collies, only move when they are told – you have to direct their every move,” he said. “In a heavily timbered paddock with a thousand head of sheep, when you cast a dog out they have to have a natural ability to know what to do, as you may not see them for half an hour.”
Glendon Kelpie Stud has introduced impressive bloodlines over the years, including Bonong, Karrawarra, Koomalah and Karana.
Rather than focusing on dog trials, Karl’s passion is in ensuring he can deliver the best dog possible for station work.
- The demonstrations run daily on site LS/36.
